DGP reviews progress on police modernization

SRINAGAR, June 17: Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra Kumar today said that militancy in the State has made Jammu and Kashmir Police to adopt new technologies and techniques to bring the force at par with the best police force in the country. He said that JKP under the modernisation programme is improving capabilities and infrastructure to counter threats on law and order and counter insurgency fronts.
Mr. Rajendra was reviewing pace of progress on police modernization at a meeting held at Police Headquarters here today. The meeting was convened to discuss the proposal for equipment relating to High End Security and Law & Order under Prime Minister’s special package for Jammu and Kashmir.
He said that State Police focused on up-gradation of all components including anti riot vehicles and security gadgets. Major emphasis was on procuring latest technologies and communication system for security purposes. Dedicated efforts were made in the areas of office automation and enhancing infrastructure abilities.
DGP further said that in view of the new challenges JKP has focused on training of its personnel in modern law and order management. He said that procuring surveillance gadgets and technologies in order to bring improvement in the investigation of cyber and other heinous crimes has become essential for the organization.
Rajendra stressed to lay more focus on enhancing intelligence gathering mechanism, saying that CCTV cameras have enabled police both prevent and detect crimes in the major cities and towns. He disclosed that all other towns and roads of the State will come under effective surveillance through these cameras. Bomb detection and disposal squads are to be up-graded and X-Ray scanners provided at vital installation, besides equipping field units for maximum efficiency,
DGP said that video conferencing facilities between Jammu and Srinagar Headquarters, with all district offices will be extended further. It will complement the efforts of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS) that has been launched by Union Home Ministry.
Earlier, the meeting was briefed by ADGP (Headquarters), V K Singh about the status of procurements in different areas of policing. He said that all efforts are afoot to bring JKP on modern lines in its different spheres of public service and security.
