JAMMU, June 11: A devastating fire turned a timber factory into ashes in Toph Sherkhania area, here today. Meanwhile, a building adjoining to the timber factory also suffered damages.
As per sources, a message was received early morning in the control room of Department of Fire and Emergency Services about the fire, which broke out in Robin timber factory owned by Shashi Abrol in Toph Sherkhania area probably due to short circuit.
On getting information, fire fighters along with tenders reached the spot and started operation to control the fire. Director General Fire and Emergency Services, V.K Singh also rushed to the spot and supervised the operation.

“At least two dozen fire tenders from stations falling in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts were pressed into service”, sources said, adding that due to winds, the fire spread quickly.
“The fire fighters have to face difficulties while dousing the flames due to delay in refilling of fire tenders”, sources said, adding that the pump sets of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services also failed to start, which also delayed the fire dousing operation.
The fire fighters team from IAF and Army were also pressed into service to control the fire, sources said, adding that with the help of replaced pump sets, the water from nearby Ranbir Canal was also pumped and sprinkled at the fire site to douse the flames.
The fire gutted the entire factory and also damaged an adjoining building owned by Nek Ram Gupta, son of Late Shankar Dass, a resident of Akhnoor Road Jammu, sources said, adding that residential houses adjoining to the fire site were also vacated.
Meanwhile, there was a long traffic jam along the Jammu-Poonch highway, near the site of fire in incident, sources said, adding that the traffic was later diverted through Talab Tillo route.
No human injury has been reported, while the exact loss could not be ascertained yet.
Cognizance has been taken by Nowabad Police in this regard.
