Depleting underground water

Sir,
Refer article ‘Depleting underground water’ DE July 16.
The level of underground water is falling day by day in many parts of the State especially in Kandi belts of the State. Last year there were reports that Kathua is facing this problem for last so many years. This is largely due to non-judicious use of water. The large quantities of water are used in factories, washing vehicles and for agricultural purpose. While doing so, people do not bother to find ways to recharge the wells. Besides, the Government too does not have a policy to overcome this problem.
Constant depletion and seasonal fluctuations in the ground water table, which is the prime source of drinking water especially in rural areas are affecting the productivity of  aquifers and also water quality is deteriorating. In earlier times, people would go for traditional water harvesting. However, this system may not be sufficient for today’s needs in all places. In many areas, the traditional systems have been irretrievably destroyed. As such a balanced mix of the traditional along with the modern water infrastructure is needed. Importance, however, should be given to localized traditional systems, which the community understands.  Once these systems are in place, we may overcome shortage of water in the State.
Yours etc…..
