SRINAGAR, May 19: National Conference MP Aga Ruhulla today said that democracy, Constitution and key institutions in the country have become “very weak”, adding that the “resolution” to this weakening lies only in strengthening them through constitutional and democratic means rather than any alternative approach.
Speaking to reporters in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Ruhullah said, “Democracy has become very weak. Institutions have become very weak.”
The MP said that the crisis could only be addressed within the constitutional framework. “We cannot see institutions being destroyed. What other ways are there in our hands? We do not even want to adopt any other way. We just want to adopt the constitutional, democratic and institutional way,” he said.
Ruhullah added that Parliament needed to be restored “in its spirit” through constitutional means. “Whether there is a dilution or whatever it is, Parliament will have to be reclaimed constitutionally,” he said, adding that the “fight has to be fought there and not anywhere else.”
He said that all pillars of governance were under strain. “Parliament has become very weak. The Constitution has become weak. Country has become weak. Institutions have become weak. We are seeing the weakness at every level,” he said.
Outlining his broader position, he said: “Rule of law should be there. Rule of constitution should be there. Equality should be there. Everyone should have freedom.”
He also called for protection of diversity, culture and religion, saying these rights must be safeguarded as part of the democratic framework.
