Democracy and corruption

Sir,
The Indian democracy is the largest democracy. But the way it functions today goes against all democratic ideals and values which guided us when this democracy came into existence. Corruption has seeped in so deep in social life that we have learnt to line with it, without questioning any corrupt act. Our politicians being corrupt have become a norm rather than exception. This had led us to lose faith in electoral process. Electoral politics, a vital aspect of democracy provides a platform for corruption to grow. Political parties go to any extent to seek votes and they never mind indulging in criminal activities to come to power. Politicians use money and mscle power to threaten people to vote in their favour.
It is well admitted fact how election booths are rigged. The fundamental basis of democracy go heavily degenerated. Often in democracy leaders have to go in for populist measures to capture the minds of the masses. These measures cannot be fulfilled with the result these provide a scope for corruption to thrine. Political parties invariably kindly communal passions and caste based divisions among the people to capture the votes. This clearly reflects the nature of our democracy. At times we even see elected politicians facing charges as grave as human trafficking, embezzlements, rape and even murder. When such people come to power, one can well realize what they would be good at. Over the years Indian democracy has witnessed scam after scam involving thousands of crores of money.
Most politicians are concerned only with their own personal gains. When it comes to making money they forget the socalled ideals they often preach. Corruption plagues every facet of our democracy and it is we who vote to power the very politicians we say have defiled our democracy.
Political corruption must be eradicated before it eradicates democracy. The RTI is a milestone in our democracy that can serves as an instrument to make the politicians accountable before the people. The Judiciary can also keep corruption under control.
Yours etc…
