Demise of Supercop

Sir,
This has reference to the editorial’Supercop is no more'(DE, May 29,2017). The demise of  KPS Gill, the supercop and committed IPS Officer, who is credited with  ending militancy from Punjab with an iron hand, has come as a big shock to  one and all.He was a towering Police Officer, gifted with exceptional qualities of courage and  leadership. He played  a key role in crushing militancy and restoring peace in the state of  Punjab .The way he handled  militancy in Punjab, especially as DGP Punjab and   achieved the desired results  speaks volume about his professional skills and  leadership qualities.Originally an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS Officer, he was picked for handling Punjab and  given a free hand by the then Chief Minister, Beant Singh for a full assault on the militants. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1989 for his exceptional work in civil services.Though he was mired in controversies including allegations of human rights violations in Punjab, he remained in demand even after his retirement in 1995 and his services were requistioned not only by the State Governments of Chhatisgarh and Gujarat but also by the Government of Sri Lanka  to  curb LTTE sedition. He will be long remembered as a counter terror specialist who led from the front and always stood by his men through thick and thin.He was believed to be  large hearted and of forgiving nature. His unstinted faith in the Indian nation and his contribution in establishing law and order  in Punjab will be long rememebered by all Indians.
Yours etc…..
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur.
