JAMMU, Jan 16: National Democratic Party (NDP) has demanded decrease in the passenger fare of buses and other commercial vehicles and freight charges of goods carriers in view of reduction witnessed in the price of petrol and diesel recently.
In a meeting of the party held here today under the chairmanship of Ravi Bakshi, its president, the members pointed out that after taking over the new Government by Narendra Modi, a sharp decrease in the prices of petrol and diesel has been witnessed. They said the petrol rates have witnessed cut from Rs 78 to nearly Rs 62 in last over seven months with the fresh slash in the rates announced today.
The operators of the public transport and goods carriers start hue and cry after hike in petrol/ diesel rates and they forced the Government to hike fare and freight rates twice by nearly 30 % in last three years. Now, the Government must provide relief to the people by announcing 30 % reduction in fare and freight charges as all the commodities including vegetables, fruits, pulses, food-grains items turn costlier after hike in fright charges. The common man has not been given any relief from the price hike, with reduction in petrol and diesel prices. The Govt must act otherwise party would launch agitation, they maintained.
R K Khajuria (advocate), N K Atri (advocate), R K Bali, Vijay Anand, SC Sharma, Ravinder Singh, Raj Kumar and others also attended the meeting.
