Declining sex ratio a big social problem: IGP

SRINAGAR, Oct 27: Saying that declining sex ration in J&K was a big social problem, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AG Mir said “Good policing, sealing of illegal ultra stenography machines raiding of abortion clinics and arrest of medical practitioners involved in the heinous crime of determination of sex are part of the solution to check the menace.
He was speaking at a national seminar on declining sex ratio in J&K, in Kashmir university on Sunday.
The seminar was organized by the Department of Social Work University of Kashmir in collaboration with J&K State Commission for Women and was earlier inaugurated by Vice Chancellor KU Prof Talat Ahmad .
The IGP said the countries like Norway , Finland and states like Kerala have shown that nation states with high sex ratio favoring girls are known to be less corrupt, prosperous, with lesser crime rates and better human development index rankings. Terming declined sex ratio is a social problem, he asked for a social remedy and change in mindset. “Reservation for women in Panchayats, enforcing dowry prohibition are helping in improving the sex ratio,” he added.
In his presidential address Prof A M Shah, Dean Academic Affairs, stressed that society as whole has to be responsive to such issues and fight the menace of female infanticide with iron hand .
Head, Social Work Department Dr Peerzada Muhammad Amin, said image of women in media, particularly advertisements, was portrayed as attention grabbers. “Women are used for selling products only. Even several derogatory slogans are used by advertising agencies which portrays wrong image of women folk,” he said.
Noted social scientist Prof Ravinder Kour presented key note address on the theme.
