Declare BGSBU as Tribal University: Gujjars

JAMMU, July 7: Stressing upon the Jammu and Kashmir Government to declare Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) as ‘BGSB State Tribal University’, the Gujjar Bakerwal Scheduled Tribe communities today demanded to develop this premier educational institution on modern lines by granting it more financial autonomy on the prototype of Indra Gandhi National Tribal University, Madhya Pradesh.
In a programme organised here by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation – a frontal organisation of Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir the community members impressed upon the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah,   who is also the Chancellor of the BGSBU to save this dream institution by granting it the tribal university status and reserve 50 per cent jobs and seats (admissions) for Poonch -Rajouri people.
Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal foundation informed on the occasion that seven point letter in shape of a memorandum signed by various dignitaries, was sent to State Chief Minister and Union Human Resources Minister demanding that BGSB University be designated as Tribal University.
Quoting the letter, he said that more that 60 per cent population of twin border districts Poonch and Rajouri belongs to Scheduled Tribe category and there are a number of schemes operational with Government of India especially with Tribal Ministry to develop such type of educational institution in a big way located in areas where sizeable Tribal population is residing.
The letter also pleads to establish local languages department in the University,    reservation of   50 per cent seats for the candidates of twin border districts, and   reservation for STs in recruitment and admission in BGSB University.
