Dead chickens pose epidemic threat to Pulwama

SRINAGAR, Oct 20: With the last month’s floods collapsing many poultry farms and leaving thousands of chickens dead in many villages in Pulwama district, epidemic threat is looming over the area as the carcasses of these birds lay there.
The villages of of Sethargund, Qazigund, Gundi Bagh and Kisrigam in Kakapora block have been surrounded by the rotten stink of these dead birds.
Many residents have been complaining of fever, chest and gastro-intestinal infections, spread by these carcasses.
In Sethargund, 45 poultry farms with 75,000 chickens were destroyed by the recent floods.
“All these birds lied in these farms during floods, and they all died,” said Javaid Ahmad Bhat, a resident of the village said.
Bhat said the dead chickens are posing a danger to their lives due to various contagious diseases.
Residents in other villages also voiced similar concerns and appealed to the district administration to clear their villages of these dead birds to save their lives.
Doctors in the district said such dead chickens are a potential epidemiological threat that must be removed immediately to dispose the dead chickens.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Sajad Ahmad Khan told Excelsior said that he had directed municipal authorities to remove the dead chicken from these vulnerable areas.
“Yes, it is true that dead chickens are lying in these villages. I will check with the Municipality and ensure that the carcasses are removed and buried in far off places away from residential areas,” Khan said.
