SRINAGAR, June 7: The Government today directed Deputy Commissioner Anantnag to conduct a probe into the alleged misbehaviour and use of abusive language by a police officer against Opposition National Conference Legislator, Bashir Ahmad Veeri, couple of days ago at Pahalgam in South Kashmir.
The directions were issued after Revenue Minister Basharat Bukhari read the preliminary enquiry report submitted by Home Secretary about the alleged misbehavior as well as abusive language of Station House Officer (SHO) Pahalgam with MLC Veeri.
The preliminary report revealed that the NC MLC Bashir Veeri had violated traffic rules in the tourist resort of Pahalgam and that led to the verbal altercation between the two. “There was one-way traffic going on at the resort and the MLC took the wrong side to which the SHO objected. This led to an argument between MLC and the police officer and there was a verbal altercation,” Bukhari said while reading the report.
The Minister said Additional Superintendent of Police, Anantnag has been asked to hold a full-fledged probe into the issue. However, the MLC intervened and said the SHO abused him and the House. Veeri said there was no mention as to why the altercation took place at first place and he raised some issues about tourists with the SHO Pahalgam after introducing himself.
The other members of Opposition National Conference and Congress also stood in support of the MLC and demanded that the probe should be held by a House Committee. Though the Minister Bukhari and Deputy Chairman Jehangir Iqbal urged members including Veeri to wait for the probe report of Additional SP but the latter stressed on the probe by House Committee.
As the members stressed for a probe by the House Committee, the Minister announced that DC Anantnag will investigate the issue and complete it within a week’s time. “The report will be submitted in the Legislative Council,” he said.
On Monday, MLC Veeri had alleged that SHO Pahalgam had used abusive language not only against him but also the House after which Home Secretary was directed to hold probe and submit report in one day period.
