PIL seeking protection of rights of transgenders

JAMMU, Oct 23: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking protection of rights of transgenders, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe has directed the Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare Department to go through the schemes which are in vogue in different parts of the country for the benefit of transgenders and examine the workability of the same for the benefit of the transgender community in J&K.
When the PIL came-up for hearing, Asif Ahmad Bhat, AAG submitted that objections to the policy which was under finalization before the Department of Social Welfare were received from the petitioners and others and that the same is at advance stage of finalization.
On this, DB directed that the policy shall be framed and placed before the court within four weeks from today.
During the course of hearing, AAG submitted that the Government of J&K has no scheme for the benefit of the transgenders.
