JAMMU, Apr 22: Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Rajnesh Oswal today sought actual position of drug menace in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The direction in this regard was issued in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Atharv Mahajan, a student of law seeking initiation of a special drive by J&K Police for checking the growing menace of drugs amongst youth and regarding low conviction in NDPSA cases.
After hearing Advocate Deepika Mahajan with Advocate Supriya Chouhan for the PIL, the DB sought an affidavit of some senior responsible officer of the J&K Police declaring the actual position of the drug menace and whether the police has been able to control it.
DB further directed that affidavit shall be filed within one month.
In the PIL, it has been mentioned that during the past 3 to 4 years the alarming proportion with which the drug abuse is catching up with the youths, including girls, is a cause of major worry.
“The class of addicts are within the age of 14-30 years. People think that the biggest threat to security is terrorism but the biggest threat is of drugs, which is polluting the brain of youth and killing them silently with much more speed than they are being killed through terrorism”, the PIL said, adding “police doesn’t seem to be serious in controlling the drug menace and appears to be hand in glove with these drug mafia, as recently police constable was also arrested in Rajouri district on charges of drug peddling”.
