DB grants 2 weeks time for compliance of earlier directions

JAMMU, July 28: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Arthav Mahajan, a student of law seeking initiation of a special drive by J&K Police in the entire State for checking the growing menace of drugs, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sanjay Kumar Gupta has granted two weeks time for ensuring compliance of the directions issued on April 18.
On April 18, DB had directed the Principal Secretary to Government, Home Department to file a status report indicating whether there is any Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) specifically meant for Jammu, Srinagar and Ladakh Province for Narcotics and if not, what are the steps taken to establish the same.
The Division Bench had also directed Zonal Director, Narcotics Control Bureau, Jammu to coordinate with the SSP, Jammu and ensure strict compliance of the law and also prompt action against the offenders after proper investigation so that the resultant criminal trials does not end in acquittal on account of improper investigation by the authority.
When the PIL came-up for hearing today Advocate Deepika Mahajan appearing for the PIL submitted that the respondents have not complied with the directions contained in the order dated 18.04.2018 in letter and spirit and the compliance report has been filed with regard to one of the directions only.
It was pointed out by Advocate S  S Ahmed that the Police Department has undertaken one programme, namely, Sanjeevani to deal with the drug menace in the State.
Upon this, Division Bench granted two weeks time to enable AAG to comply with the directions issued vide order dated 18.04.2018 as well as to apprise this court with regard to action taken by the Police Department for de-addiction of drug addicts, under the programme, namely, Sanjeevani.
