JAMMU: A day long shutdown, protests and rallies on Monday welcomed the Darbar Move offices on the opening day in this winter capital of the state.
Chamber of Federation for Industries had given a call for shutdown on GST Row, which was supported by many political and non political organisations.
Jammu and Kashmir Congress, National Conference, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, Team Jammu, Bar Association of Jammu, Traders, Transporters, had also announced the shutdown call and held rallies across the district.
Led by JKPCC Chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Congress activists took out protest march from outside the party office this morning. The protestors amid anti-government slogans marched towards the Civil Secretariat but heavy contingent of police stopped them.
The Congress leaders and activists were court arrested as preventive measure. Meanwhile J&K Panthers Party led by its chairman Harshdev Singh and president Balwant Singh Mankotia also held a rally to protest policies of the PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. Team Jammu an amalgam of members of the civil society, led by its Chairman Zorawar Singh Jamwal, took out a car and motorbike rally across the city.
Shouting slogans ‘BJP Hai Hai’, the Team Jammu activists appealed people to observe complete shutdown in protest against the failure of the government in addressing the issues of Jammu concern.
However, Gujjars also held a rally to lodge their protest against the Government.
Transporters observed one-day token strike asserting that the Government has failed in addressing their long pending demands.
Many private schools remained closed due to shutdown call while offices and colleges witnessed thin attendance of employees.
Jammu and Kashmir Police had made elaborate arrangements and taken measures to foil attempts of Secretariat Gherao and protests.
Adequate arrangements were made for smooth functioning of the Darbar Move offices with additional deployment of security forces.
The district administration had imposed Section 144 of CrPC around the Civil Secretariat.
Barricades were raised at some of the points to prevent protestors from marching towards the Civil Secretariat and all the Station House Officers of respective Police Stations were directed to monitor the situation in their jurisdictions. (AGENCIES)
