Dancing is an action shared by both professionals and amateurs alike and is enjoyed in all parts of the world. This day is all about celebrating the history of dance and recognizing its monumental place across all cultures.Whether you love ballet, street dance or the floss, today is the perfect opportunity to show off your moves. That’s because it’s International Dance Day, which has been going now for 36 years.
Every 29 April is International Dance Day, a day set aside by the International Dance Council to promote public awareness of the “art of dance”. The date was chosen because it is the birthday of famed French dance artist Jean-Georges Noverre, but no particular type of dance or dancer is the focus of the holiday.
International Dance Day is especially meant to get those not usually interested in professional dancing interested in it. It’s a time for promoters and practitioners of dance to reach out to a wider public.Founded in 1982, International Dance Day seeks to promote the art of dance around the world. The founding body, the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute selects a special personality each year to create an International Dance Day Message to be shared around the world. Dance is practised by both amateurs and professionals and is enjoyed in theatres everywhere. This special day is all about the history of dance and the recognition of its place in society.
Dance is both an art form and a method of communication in cultures around the world, and is practised by millions of people. Celebrate this International Dance Day by learning about the history of dance, or perhaps even learning a new dance yourself or with a group of friends! It’s a great excuse to sign up for those dance classes you’ve always fancied.
Dance is an art form which refers to rhythmic movement of the body to music. It is also a form of expression, social interaction which may be presented in a spiritual or performance setting. Various forms of dances are performed all over the world for various purposes international dance day is an event which celebrates the joy of dancing. Officially it commemorates the creator of the modern ballet. It is also observed to increase the awareness of the importance of dance among the general public, as well as to persuade government all over the world to provide a proper place for dance in all system of education, from primary to higher according to international dance council – “while dance has been an integral part of human culture throughout its history, it is under prioritized by official establishment in the world”.
The theme selected for the 2019 observance is Dance and Spirituality. While spirituality uniformly informs and inspires Indian dance, our culture of dance goes beyond such simple remedy for many problems persisting in our busy lives
Dance in India comes in different genres and means different things to different people. We have the highly evolved classical or traditional dance art forms. But there are also a huge variety of folk forms from different parts of this country. Plus, the new variants: Bollywood dance, jazz dance, hip-hop, salsa, contemporary and so on. Each form is being taught, performed and enjoyed!
Today dance is seen not just as a hobby but as something with its own health benefits and an excellent way to stay fit. Researches show that dancing is one of the best way of not only shedding ounces of weight, but psychologically it is a proven remedy to escape from stress, depression and tension. Thus making a person feel less fatigue and relaxed. Dancing has multiple health benefits such as, improved heart and lungs, increase in muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness. Plus, it makes you feel happy. Studies have also shown that dance helps to stay flexible, reduce stress and lose weight, among others. Indian dance forms like Bharatnatyam, Odissi or Kathak, help to burn a lot of calories, increase mental stimulation and are better at toning thighs and calf muscles. It is said that 10 minutes of Odissi is equal to an hour of any workout and Kathak helps in toning up the body and improve blood circulation.
At a time when debates on the use, misuse and abuse of the body as a commodity rage across the world, the art of dance is an undeniably important component of culture in helping to promote harmony at many levels. India is rich in dance arts and while the renaissance of the classical forms during the pre- and post-independence period is a celebrated chapter of history, it is not easy to say how much an understanding and acceptance of dance as a secure career has seeped into society. India is a big country and even a minority commands big numbers so there is no doubt that dance has become a popular pastime.
Understanding the importance of this day, people on social media are providing reasons on why the day is important. While one wrote, “Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free,” another wrote, “According to me, there is no better way of celebrating love, happiness and devotion, than dancing!”.
Dance should be something that inspires an individual or audience and lightens their mood. Dance should have a purpose – yes entertainment is the purpose, but entertainment through just ‘dance’. That’s why it is an art form – that’s the true definition of dance. We need to promote those dance production companies/choreographer who represent dance as dance and also give them their share of limelight. Dance should not be about stunts, it should be an act of inspire. Dance should be to express and not impress.
‘Dance’ is one word that can set anybody’s feet pulsating and swaying to its rhythm. Everybody likes to dance in their own way. While some extra-ordinary dancers love to flaunt it publicly, the others like to whirl privately around. We dance when we are happy, in a mood to celebrate or let’s say we are also dancing every day with the various rhythms in our life, sometimes on high notes or sometimes low.
Since dancing has been an integral part of human culture, Dancing had always been a part of our culture too. In fact, every state in our country has their own dance forms. Be it Ghoomar of Rajasthan, Bhangra of Punjab, Kud, Jagarana, rouf and Bachha Nagma of Jammu & Kashmir or Dandiya of Gujarat. Every dance form has a unique feature that differentiates it from others..
From the last 10 years, our nation has witnessed a revolution in dance. Our weekends are packed watching a number of dance reality shows that have mushroomed – kids, adults, couples, celebrities and even moms perform solo or in group and cater to various English, Hindi and various regional language speaking audiences. Thanks to those shows today, dance has become a household name and parents are now seriously considering dance as a carrier option for their kids. Struggling dancers have got name and fame in the society and most importantly they have got work.
So whenever you are bored, cross or feel dejected with your life, grab a room, turn on some good music and begin drooling with the beats. And in the midst of that grooving you’ll feel less feeble and more tranquilized.
So on this World Dance Day, try to take time out for yourself templates. World Dance Day gives us an opportunity to retrospect, celebrate, have a dialogue, bring together performers across generations and bring the community of dancers together, which does not happen very often.
Apart from the enjoyment and fun it provides, dancing can prove to be a great and get set to jive, for everyone amongst us can surely move it like Jagger.
