Curing obesity through Bariatric surgery

JAMMU, June 10: The Bariatric surgery is the only long term option for morbidly obese patients who fail to achieve desired results in controlling the disease through diet control, exercise and medicines.
This was stated by Dr Ravinder Singh , Chief Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon from Fortis Amritsar along with Dr Gurbilas P Singh, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist while talking to media persons here today on the burning topic of treatment to several diseases related to morbid obesity e.g, Diabetes, fatty liver, hypertension, obstructive sleep Apnoea etc.
Dr Ravinder Singh explained that there is a specific protocol to select patients for Bariatric surgery and post treatment all other co-morbidities are cured along with weight loss.
He said the 90-95 percent of morbidly obese patients who fail to get desired results from other modalities can be fully treated by Bariatric surgery.
Dr Singh further explained that the procedure requires two to three days of hospitalization with minimal complications. He emphasized that Fortis Hospital Amritsar is the only regional centre with a complete Bariatric team of various specialists including Endocrinologist, Gastroenterologist/ Hypatologist, internal medicine, Dietitian and tertiary care cardiac and intensive care back up.
