Srinagar, Sept 19: Curfew, restrictions and shutdown continued on the 73rd consecutive day today in Kashmir while the clashes and protests were reported from several parts of the Valley.
In the meantime, the Post paid mobile services that were snapped last week on Monday were restored tonight. A police spokesman said here that with the improvement in the situation post paid mobile services were restored tonight.
Curfew remained in force in five Police Station areas of Srinagar’s Old City including MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and in Khanyar. Huge contingents of security forces were deployed in all these areas who had erected barricades to restrict civilian movement.
In other areas of Srinagar, a complete shutdown was observed with all kinds of business and educational activities shut but private transport was plying in Civil Lines areas.
Curfew and restrictions were imposed in Vehil village of Shopian, its adjacent areas, Pulwama, Baramulla and in parts of Srinagar in view of the march called by the separatist.
A Police spokesman said that restriction under Section 144 CrPC remained in force in the Valley. However, curfew was imposed under the areas of some police stations in Srinagar city and Vehil area of Shopian district only.
Police today arrested 45 persons on charges of creating trouble in Kashmir. These people were arrested for disturbing the situation in the Valley by placing obstructions on roads/lanes, damaging civilian vehicles and shops.
The spokesman said that barring stray stone pelting incidents in Sopore and Shopian, overall situation remained under control today across the valley. “Increased vehicular traffic and movement of people was observed on roads between various districts and towns of the valley including Srinagar city”, the spokesman added.
Scores of protesters were injured in South Kashmir’s Shopian district after clashes erupted between the security forces and protesters. As soon as people started gathering for a protest rally at Vehil by defying curfew, security forces swung into action and fired tear smoke and pellets to disperse them.
“Soon after the clashes, security forces fired tear smoke to disperse the protesters. A local government school building in the Chatwattan area was gutted in fire that engulfed it during the protests.
Police said that a group of miscreants with the intentions of creating disturbance assembled at village Vehil in Shopian and set on fire a Middle school building.
Police and security force deployment reached the spot to deal with the situation where miscreants resorted to stone pelting. “In order to disperse the miscreants little force was used which caused injures to two miscreants/stone pelters. In this incident some police/security personnel also got injured”, Police said.
Clashes and protests were also reported from several South Kashmir areas during which security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protesters who were pelting stones at them.
Minor clashes were reported from several areas of Srinagar including Habba Kadal, Batamaloo, Khanyar. However, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Residents of Kremshore in Budgam allege that security forces ransacked scores of residential houses and smashed parked vehicles in the village last night and arrested four youths. Security forces also fired pellets on protesters resulting in injuries to several people.
Scores of protesters were injured after security forces fired pellets on them at Khan pora area of Baramulla. Security forces fired tear gas and pellets to disperse the protesters who were throwing stones on them.
A 19-year old girl died due to cardiac arrest at Shopian as protests and clashes amid curfew and shutdown continue across Kashmir Valley on Day 73 after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen divisional commander Burhan Wani in July.
Khushboo of Gadapora Shopian died of cardiac as teargas and stun grenades were fired by police to quell protesters at Chatwathar in Shopian exploded with loud explosions. The girl collapsed as she got scared and died. The death of the girl led to violent protests in the area.
However, a police spokesman said: “The district administration Shopian has clarified that Gaddapora , the home of the girl is about 7 Km away from the Vehil, where the miscreants set on fire a school and also indulged in stone pelting. As per the hospital authorities the girl has died in all likelihood because of cardiac arrest. The death of the girl is no way related to the incident that happened at Vehil.”
