SRINAGAR : Curfew restrictions in south Kashmir towns of Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam were lifted early this morning following improvement in the overall situation.
However, restrictions under section 144 CrPC remained inforce in Kulgam, where reports of protests and stone pelting were received yesterday.
Curfew was imposed in Shopian and Kulgam towns and their adjoining areas on September 8 morning following massive protests after the death of four persons, allegedly in the firing of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) near Gagran camp a day earlier.
Police confirmed that three of the deceased were having no previous militant links while the fourth was a foreign militant of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT).
Yesterday, the curfew restrictions were extended to Pulwama town following a ‘Shopian Challo’ call given by the breakaway Hurriyat Conference on the fourth day ‘ Fatha’ of deceased persons.
Unprecedented security arrangements, including sealing of all roads leading to Shopian were made to foil the challo call.
Barring some incidents of stone pelting from some areas in Shopian and Kulgam, the situation remained by and large peaceful.
The restrictions were lifted early this morning in all towns.
As a precautionary measure, restrictions under section 144 CrPC were being strictly implemented in Kulgam.
People alleged that four persons were killed in unprovoked firing by the security forces.
The Communist Party of India (M) has demanded a time bound judicial probe into the incident while main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that it was cold blooded murder.
The Congress, a partner in the coalition government in the state, has also demanded a inquiry and action against the security force personnel involved in the incident. (AGENCIES)
