CUJ proposes capacity building centre for journalists, forms planning panel

JAMMU, Sept 16: The Central University of Jammu (CUJ) is in the process of setting up the J&K Media Centre for capacity building of journalists at grassroots level.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Ashok Aima today constituted a 12-member programme, planning and management committee for this purpose.
While VC CUJ will be the chairman of the Committee, Dr Bachha Babu will be the Course Co-ordinator. Three ex-officio members of the committee are Director Information J&K Government Rahul Pandey, Dr JN Baliya (Head, Department of Mass Communication and New Media, CUJ) and Prof Rakesh Goswami (Regional Director, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Jammu).
Four senior journalists – former News Director Aaj Tak, Q W Naqvi, former Executive Director Rajya Sabha TV, Rajesh Badal, Executive Editor Daily Excelsior Neeraj Rohmetra and Himalayan Media Foundation Chairman Ashwani Kumar – are members of the Committee. Three special invitees are Pradeep Dutta (Senior Editor, Times Now), SP Sharma (Bureau Chief, The Statesman) and Captain (retired) Murti Gupta (Editor, Greater Jammu).
The CUJ has also sent a proposal for this centre to the J&K Government for funding. The media centre of the CUJ is aimed at organizing specially designed hands on training based Short Term Orientation Programmes (STOPs) in media psychology and philosophy of media law & ethics, and socio-economic and political concerns of mass media for all new media entrants in J&K. It will also organize advanced level and more medium oriented programmes for capacity enhancement and continuous knowledge up-gradation and exposure to emerging developments of media industries who are involved in media practice.
This media centre will ensure that every journalist of J&K is exposed to Short Term Orientation Programmes at least twice during his/her career and get certificate issued by Central University of Jammu. The Centre will organize specially designed programmes in collaboration with FTII Pune, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Jammu and Press Club of Jammu to enable the professionals involved in media practices in J&K to utilize fast growing information and communication technology for better society.
