KATHUA, Sept 16: One person who was reportedly involved in criminal activities was detained under the stringent Public Safety Act in Kathua district, police said today.
Sharafat Ali, a resident of Lohai-Malhar, was taken into custody by police and later lodged in the District Jail in Udhampur under the Public Safety Act (PSA), a police spokesman said.
He was arrested by Kathua police under the overall supervision of SSP Kathua Shobhit Saksena.
Police said on Monday its team led by SHO PS Malhar, PSI Arun Shan under the close supervision of DySP PC Malhar, Sunil Kumar apprehended Sharafat Ali, son of Ali Akbar of Lohai Tehsil Lohai Malhar district Kathua who is a history sheeter/ habitual criminal involved in various illegal activities from past few years.
In order to prevent the illegal activities within the district, “Dossier” was prepared against the accused person and sent to the District Magistrate Kathua for his detention under Public Safety Act- 1978 (PSA). Accordingly District Magistrate Kathua issued a detention warrant against the accused person under the Public Safety Act 1978. The warrant has been executed today and lodged at District Jail Udhampur to curtail his illegal activities.
“Ali is a habitual criminal who has been involved in various illegal acts over the past few years. To prevent his illegal activities, a dossier was prepared and sent to the Kathua District Magistrate who ordered his detention under the PSA,” he said.
In a related development, two drug peddlers — Abhinandan Singh and Amit Sangra from Kootah village — were arrested along with 5.47 gm of heroin from the Hiranagar sector in Kathua, the spokesman said.
Police intercepted the duo during checking on the Railway Road, leading to the recovery of the narcotic substance from their possession, he said.
The accused have been booked under the relevant sections of NDPS Act. Further probe is underway to trace the linkages of the narcotic supply racket, he said.
