“I am endeavouring to see God through the service of humanity for I know God is neither in Heaven nor down below but is the every one”
Mahatma Gandhi
“Nar Seva, Narayan Seva” is most familiar axiom among the people of noble souls whose hands and feet are active in the service of humanity. Paragons of nobility, they are exceptionally dear to God for their thought fulness towards the poor and the needy. By their inner promptings, they keenly long to alleviate the sufferings of less fortunate brethern in whatever way they can. Brimming with human milk, they realize that talents or riches they hold are Gods gifts meant for serving and sharing with others and they are just the trustees. Serving caring and sharing are the oblations in the Divine Yagna’ (Sacrificial fire). Natural calamities like COVID-19 and devastating floods are the opportunities afforded to us to feed the hungry, raiment to the bare and shelter to the homeless. These noble acts are the spiritual endeavours in true sense which can prove to lead to ‘Moksha’ (final beautitude), that is to cross the ocean of mundane existence. Bhagwan’s creation has been endowned with the spirit of service in one way or the other. The Sun, the Moon, the five elements the animals, birds, plants, shrubs all are engaged in service. Therefore, our true nature is to serve. We are embodiments of love (‘Premaswaroopa’). Service and love move together.
Sage Naradda was born of a maid servent of Brahmanas well versed in vedic lores. In his very childhood,he served the wandering ascetics devotedly, at once in 24 hours whatever was left in their dishes after they had finished their meals and was thereby cleansed of all sins. In this way, in the service and society of Godly men, he elevated himself to the sagehood of the highest order, a dearest devotee of Narayan with acess to move about inside and outside of three worlds uninterrupted.
Shedding the obsession of self-centredness, we must fulfill our obligation we owe to God’s creation and mitigate the sufferings of poor needy caused due to prolonged lockdowns as preventive measure to contain outbreak of COVID-19 and taste the sweetness of service. Altitude of enduring cheerfully for the sake of service to the needy and practicing Giving, Giving, Giving is the noble way to propitiate our Lord who will rain down many many times than we give. We must motivate and raise multitude of strong force of benefactors (Daanveers’) that will derive cheer by extending helping hand in selfless service.
Every locality and Mohalla should constitute a welfare committee responsible to ensure that families inflicted by the Lockdowns have food to eat clothes to cover shelter to sleep under and medicines to the ailing. In villages, Panchayats should play this role.
Followers of the Divine virtue of selfless service brim with compassion and perceive the same soul in all other beings. They are invariably at peace with themselves. They do not rebel for personal gains but secure universal welfare and fellowship treading the path of ‘Dharma’ (Righteousness). Spiritual perception automatically grows in them like the shadow that follows moving object.
All of us need is carry out earnest introspection to realize the role and obligations towards the society. Charity (‘Daanam’) is one of the essentials of spiritual pursuits, (1/XVI) Srimand Bhagwat Geeta). Persons with bounteous hands are known as ‘Pavath ghataks’ (who live for others)
Lord Krishna declares in Srimad Bhagvad Gita (ch. 3) –
“Istan Bhoganhi Vo Deva Dasyante Yajna Bhavitah
Tair Dattana Pradayaibhyo Yo Bhunke Stena Eva-Sah”
(92)
Yajnasista Sinah Santo Mucyante Sarvakil Bisaih
Bhunjate Te Tvagham Papa Ye Pacantyat Makaranat
(93)
Fostered by sacrifice the gods will bestow on you all the desired boons. He who enjoys their gifts without giving (or sharing with His creation) is verily a thief.’ Sacrifice means ‘Yajna’ an act directed to the welfare of all life.’
The righteous who partake of left over of the sacrifice are absolved of sins, but the wicked one who cook for themselves only, eat sin’.
Therefore, feeding the hungry is ‘Yajna’ performed for the common good, and is ‘Narayana Seva’
Let the spirit of altruism flourish.
We are deeply indebted to the society and the nature for providing us everything for our sustenance and this debt can be paid back through the medium of selfless service only.
Frontline warriors like doctors, para-medical staff, safai karamcharis, security personnel, personnel in essential services and other such workers engaged in fighting COVID-19 battle are worthy of deep reverence.
Not only on the COVID-19 front but we have battles to fight and with on the borders, on the aconomic, social, political and moral fronts.
Therefore, we must immediately build a solid and strong military clout to thwart the evil designs of enemies put our heart and soul with the nation, elevate spiritually, imbue in moral purity”, manifest skills and creative instincts embrace swadeshi, work hard and sweat for Atam Nirbhartha (i.e self reliance) enrich politically and sustain no fractures in actions and deeds. Every Bhartiya must culviate the cardinal virtue of Patriotism and follow the dictum”Nation First The Rest Later”.
