NEW DELHI, Apr 9 : Corona related mortality is higher in elders while morbidity is higher in the young.
This observation was made by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, who is also a reputed Diabetologist and Physician, during a two – hour long video conference interaction with pensioners across the country, in which Director AIIMS New Delhi and Head of Department of Pulmonary Medicine Dr Randeep Guleria and Associate Professor Geriatric Medicine AIIMS New Delhi Dr Prasun Chatterjee also participated.
Pensioners from 15 to 20 Indian cities participated in the Video Conference, which included Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Mumbai, Chennai, Jammu, Bhubaneswar, Mohali, Gwalior, Puducherry, New Delhi, Pune, Jaipur etc. There was also a question hour session in which pensioners and elder citizens put across their queries on different medical aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, it is important to understand that the statistics of  the last few weeks reveal that a higher number of COVID-19 cases were found to have occurred among the youngsters, possibly also because they did not observe the required precautions, but most of them invariably recovered without any complications. On the other hand, he said, even though the number of elder citizens infected was lesser, but because of lower immunity status, the incidence of complications and deaths was higher in them.
We must bear in mind, said Dr Jitendra Singh, that small children venturing out to play without observing the discipline of social – distancing may not get the symptoms themselves even if they are infected because of their higher level of resistance, but they may infect their grand-parents who may immediately become symptomatic and sick.
Emphasising on the importance of hygiene and social distancing, Dr Jitendra Singh lauded the tireless service being rendered by medical and para-medical persons, even though at a risk to their own self. He assured that all the essential supplies are being made available on time and even the monthly pension amount has been deposited in all the accounts.
Dr Randeep Guleria emphasised on using face masks. He said, Corona is a droplet infection and can be avoided with necessary precautions.
Dr Prasun Chatterjee talked about the care of elderly to prevent Corona infection.
