Core Group reviews security

Srinagar, May 11: The Core Group of security agencies reviewed security scenario of Kashmir valley at Badami Bagh Cantonment here today and chalked out a strategy to maintain peace during the summer.
A statement issued by the Army said that the Core Group meeting was held at Badami Bagh Cantonment to review the overall security situation and to draw out the strategy in maintaining peace in the Valley during the summer season. “Meeting was co-chaired by the Security Advisor Lt Gen Om Prakash, GOC Chinar Corps and the DGP Ashok Prasad with senior officers of Army, Police, CRPF, BSF, Intelligence Agencies and Civil Administration in attendance”, the statement added.
The statement said that Lt Gen Om Prakash while addressing the meeting welcomed the new members of the Core Group and complimented the officials for the high level of synergy and bonhomie exhibited by all the stake holders in addressing the security concerns of the Valley.
The statement said that the DGP Ashok Prasad expressed elaborate on the key security initiatives that have been put into place to manage the law and order situation in the Valley. “Major efforts required to be taken by various security agencies with regard to sustaining the peace and harmony through the summer of 2013 were also discussed”, the statement added.
Sources said that the Core Group discussed the steps taken for the maintaining law and order in Kashmir valley in view of the tourist season and Amarnath yatra when large number of tourists visit Kashmir valley and lakhs of pilgrims make a pilgrimage to Holy Amarnath cave shrine in Himalayan mountains in South Kashmir.
Sources said that the Core Group discussed the infiltration attempts by the militants from across the Line of Control and measures taken by the security forces to prevent it and tackle the infiltrated militants in hinterland.
Security agencies have inputs that around 800 militants are waiting on the launch pads across the LoC for infiltration. They have also inputs that militants this year are trying to infiltrate in large numbers after security forces achieved major successes against them over the past few years.
Sources said that Core Group also discussed the killing of policemen and targeting of Panchs and Sarpanchs in Kashmir valley by militants. The strategy was devised to counter the targeting of the Panchayat members and put pressure on the militants who have been carrying out attacks.
The last Core Group meeting was held at BB Cant on March 9 following widespread protests in the aftermath of the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
