SRINAGAR, Nov 16: A policeman was killed in an encounter with militants in the forest area of Sopore in district Baramulla early today while militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness and dense forests.
Sources said that Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police Srinagar and Sopore and 27 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army cordoned off Marbal village of Zaloora in Sopore Baramulla district last night after they received information about presence of 4 Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants.
They said early in the morning at around 4:30 a.m militants fired at security forces who had cordoned off the village, killing a police man, constable Mohammad Shafi Dar son of Mohammad Shaban Dar of Kulgam. They said that Bhat was critically injured in the militant firing and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared as brought dead.
Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines Srinagar to pay homage to Dar. Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar led civil, police officers and jawans in the wreath laying ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by the slain policemen’s family. The body was later on handed over to his next of kin for last rites.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajendra said that during the last 25 years of turmoil, Jammu and Kashmir Police lost its 1500 men. He said that the Police are at the forefront of fighting militancy in Kashmir which has led to casualties.
On the Zaloora operation, the DGP said that security forces cordoned off the Zaloora area on a specific information and Dar fought valiantly against the militants. He said that the area is under cordon and “we hope to get them soon”.
In the meantime, a group of militants escaped from cordon in Naid Khai area of Bandipora district this evening.
Source said that security forces cordoned off Tengpora in Naid Khai area of Bandipora district this evening after they received information about presence of four militants in the village. However, militants fired at the troops and three of them managed to flee. However, security forces cordon around the village is on against one militant who is still hiding in the village. Sources said one among the four militants was injured and he is still in the village.
And security forces this evening cordoned off Warpora village in North Kashmir’s Sopore area after some gun shots were heard from the village. Sources said few gun shots were heard from the village and security forces immediately cordoned off but the militants had fled from the village.
