SRINAGAR : A constable of State police was killed and a civilian injured when unidentified gunmen fired at them in south Kashmir.
A police spokesman said here that gunmen fired upon Constable Zahoor Ahmad at Redwani Bala in south Kashmir district of Kulgam. One motorcyclist, Zahoor Ahmad Allie, was also injured in the shootout, he said.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. A massive hunt has been launched to nab the gunmen responsible for the attack.
Five militants, four of them locals, were killed in a fierce encounter in the woods at Shopian on January 15 while a foreign militant was killed by security forces at Sopore on January 14. A foreign militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba was arrested by security forces at Sopore yesterday.
Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has strongly condemned the killing of police constable. Ms Mufti in a statement here said violence in any form is unacceptable and there is no place for innocent killings in a civilised society.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, she prayed for the everlasting peace of the departed soul. (AGENCIES)
