Convicted politicians: SC adjourns case for Feb 12

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned for February 12, a plea filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Ashwini Upadhyay, seeking to debar convicted persons, including politicians and leaders, from forming a political party and becoming its office bearer.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, asked the Union of India and the Election Commission to file their respective detailed submissions and replies within four weeks before the Apex Court.

While hearing the plea of Mr Upadhyay, the Supreme Court observed that the case was important and needed to be heard in a detailed manner. The BJP leader had sought a direction from the Apex Court to debar the convicted persons, including politicians and leaders, from forming a political party and becoming its office bearer. (AGENCIES)
