Sir,
While I was witnessing the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly in the press gallery today,Mr.Harsh Dev Singh introduced a bill with the objective of inserting the word “secular” in the preamble of the State’s constitution. The bill had been introduced earlier and refered to the select committee for recommendation. It had now to be considered and passed. Law Minister who himself was a member of the select committee and had given a positive opinion however chose to oppose the bill and the bill could not be passed.
What appeared surprising to me was that the State has taken the whole preamble of its constitution from the constitution of India. How and why did it omit the word “secular”from its own constitution. What about all those stalwarts who boasted of being secular; did they do it inadvertently or wilfully. Even if the mistake was commited why was not it removed even after 57 years. Why did the present Government oppose it? All this exposes the real nature of our main political parties. It justifies the ascribing of “pseudo secularist” term to our ruling parties.
Yours etc……
