JAMMU, Feb 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Border Area Development Conference (JK-BADC), a registered organization working for the welfare of residents of border areas of J&K has urged the Union Home Ministry to constitute a local Human Rights Commission in J&K.
The organization has appealed the Prime Minister and Home Minister to establish a Human Rights commission herein Jammu and Kashmir as it was working prior to 2019 before the abrogation of article 370.
Dr Shazad Ahmed Malik, Chairman of the BADC and former Vice Chancellor while demanding the establishment of Human Rights Commission in J&K said that in a civilized society and democratic country like India, it is imperative that basic human rights of every citizen are protected and to ensure that these rights remain intact, there is an urgent need for constitution of statutory body, i.e. J&K Human Rights Commission having its headquarters in Kashmir and Jammu divisions and benches in each district so that every resident of J&K whosoever wishes to make a formal complaint may submit so without any difficulty.
The former VC said that at present the complaints regarding Human Rights violations has to be made to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that is situated in National capital, New Delhi and ordinary people of J&K are not able to present their pleas there. He further added that though there is provision of submission of online pleas in NHRC but many people in J&K and especially those residing in border areas do not have access to internet facilities. The Lt Governor and the Union Home Minister must take initiative to restore HR Commission in J&K, Dr Shazad added.
