*JKPCC chief, several former legislators detained

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Apr 7: JKPCC president GA Mir and several former legislators and other senior leaders were detained today by the police in Jammu as J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) held a massive protest demonstration against the unprecedented price hike on petrol, diesel, cooking gas and other essentials commodities in twin capitals of the UT.

As part of nationwide protest, a large number of Congress workers led by senior leaders assembled at Tawi bridge area to protest against unprecedented price hike of petrol, diesel, gas and all essential commodities. Carrying play cards and banners and raising slogans, the Congress workers led by G A Mir and other senior leaders held a strong protest near Maharaja Hari Singh statue at Tawi bridge Jammu.
The senior leaders and party workers were taken into preventative custody as their number swelled towards Tawi bridge disrupting the traffic on highway for some time. The police had a tough time to control the protesting Congress leaders who were protesting against unreasonable price hike by Modi Government. The PCC Chief and several senior leaders were taken into custody by the police and taken to District Police lines Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Later, they were released by the police.
Earlier, addressing the gathering Mir lashed out at the Modi Government and BJP for fleecing the poor people by unreasonable taxes and blamed Modi Government of indulging in tax terrorism to give undue benefit to big capitalist at the cost of poor people. He said that all essential commodities, eatables, medicines etc. are touching the sky high and the common man and poor people are unable bear the burden.
Prominent leaders who were arrested include Raman Bhalla, Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma, Yogesh Sawhney, Balwan Singh, Thakur Balbir Singh, G L Chalotra, Indu Pawar, K C Bhagat, Ashok Dogra and Ved Mahajan.
In Srinagar also, former legislators, senior leaders, DCC presidents, Block presidents and prominent party workers including frontals protested against inflation while raising slogans against the Central Government for the unprecedented price hike, terming it as a loot and assault on people’s economy especially weaker and down trodden section of the people.
Congress leaders displayed placards and empty gas cylinders demanding roll back of prices, which is responsible for pushing poor and weaker sections to backwardness. They slammed the Centre’s failed economic policies. The protesting leaders tried to take out peaceful protest march from party headquarters towards Lal Chowk but they were not allowed by the police.
