NEW DELHI :Opposition members including from the Congress and the DMK staged walkout in the Lok Sabha on Thursday protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill passed by Parliament.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill proposes to accord citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christian migrants who come to India after facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
As soon as the Zero Hour commenced, Congress floor Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Indian government should not spoil its relation with Bangladesh as lakhs of Hindus live in that country.
He said there is “dismay” in the North East region following the passage of the Bill and the region has plunged into turmoil.
Speaker Om Birla, however, remarked that Bangladesh “cannot run India’s Parliament”.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that Mr Chowdhury was “instigating violence in the North East states and Assam” and condemned such remarks from the opposition member.
Amid din, Mr Chowdhury further said, “Army have been deployed in Tripura” and went onto say that the “Kashmir phenomenon” is being replicated in the North East.
He also said Jammu and Kashmir is also yet to return to normal and maintained that both North East region and Jammu and Kashmir were strategically important for India.
There was an uproar as Congress members were involved in argument with the members of treasury bench including Nishikant Dubey.
Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy also said Tripura and Assam were burning.
He demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement on the situations in North East.
As Speaker asked another member to make his submission, the Congress and other opposition parties staged walkout protesting against the Bill, which was approved by Lok Sabha on Monday and by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
