JAMMU, Sept 1: A delegation of Congress leaders from Jammu East and Nagrota Constituency, led by former Minister Yogesh Sawhney and Ex-MLA Balwan Singh, met with Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Rana to highlight the severe damages caused by recent floods and heavy rains in various parts of Jammu.
The delegation, comprising ex-Corporator of Ward 71 Shamma Aktar, senior vice president DCC Jammu Urban Ram Magotra, general secretary DCC Jammu Urban Prem Sharma, Assembly president Jammu East Mehul Abrol, Haneef Choudhary, Anyaat Ali, Pervez Ahmad, Javed Ahmad, Shaki Mohamad, Shobat Ali and Sameena, discussed pressing concerns in Old City Peerkho, Rajiv Colony Pull Par, Gujjar Nagar, Old University Lane, Jagti Panchayat, Sidra Ward 71, Sheetli Filtration Plant, Donthly water tanker supply, and other concerns. The Minister gave a patient hearing and assured the delegation that he would soon conduct an on-spot inspection to initiate necessary relief and rehabilitation measures.
Speaking on the matter, Sawhney said that the devastation caused by the floods and heavy rainfall has left residents in a dire condition, particularly in low-lying areas and localities near water bodies. He emphasized that the Sheetli Filtration Plant and Donthly tanker water supply system were badly impacted, leading to a serious disruption in drinking water availability.
Sawhney urged the Government to immediately strengthen flood control measures, repair damaged infrastructure, and provide compensation to affected families who lost property and belongings. He stressed that without swift intervention, the hardships of the people would worsen in the coming weeks. Sawhney also thanked the Minister for his time and attention, and the positive assurance they were provided with.
Ex-MLA Balwan Singh, while echoing these concerns, said that many areas have been completely neglected in terms of flood management and disaster preparedness. He pointed out that people in these localities not only face the risk of property damage but also health hazards due to stagnant water and unhygienic conditions.
Singh called upon the Jal Shakti Ministry to adopt long-term flood mitigation projects, alongside urgent relief measures, to protect vulnerable populations from recurring disasters.
