Cong celebrates birth anniversary of Nehru

JAMMU, Nov 14: Rich tributes were paid to first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru in a function held at PCC headquarters, Shaheedi Chowk  to celebrate his 127th Birth Anniversary here today.
The function was organized by District Congress Committee Jammu which was attended by senior functionaries of PCC, DCC Jammu Urban and blocks and wards of Jammu city.
PCC chief  Ghulam Ahmed Mir presided  over the function while prominent leaders who paid tributes included  Sham Lal Sharma,  PCC senior vice president; CLP Leader Rigzin Jora, Jahangir Mir-Deputy Chairman Legislative Council, Raman Bhalla- PCC vice president, MLA  Ch Mohd Akram and Ravinder Sharma- PCC chief spokesman.
Mr Mir  in  his address described Pt Nehru as a  great statesman and visionary leader who laid sound foundation of modern India. He is Known as architect of Modern India because of his multi- dimensional contributions in shaping the  future of Independent India, Mir said.
PCC president further said that Pt  Nehru was a great freedom fighter, a hero of masses, a passionate Indian who was enraged by the injustices inflicted upon the oppressed people of India under British Raj. He gave up material comfort of life and dedicated his life to the struggle to free India from colonial rule. He was ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and remained in jail for around nine years during freedom struggle.
Senior leader Sham Lal Sharma while paying tribute described Pt Nehru as the tallest leader of his time, whose contribution in the freedom struggle and as first Prime Minister can never be forgotten. He said that contribution of  Nehru to bring the State of J&K to the fold of Indian nation  can’t be forgotten and there is need to expose the distortions being made by certain forces for vested political interests.
CLP leader Rigzin Jora described Pt Nehru as a true democrat and nationalist with global outlook. He was a builder of institutions of excellence like IITs  that truly empowered the younger generations of India to become the globally competitive and recognized.
Raman Bhalla recalled great contributions of Nehru in the freedom struggle and as first Prime Minister. He criticized the communal forces who are trying to distort history to misguide the younger generations about the role of Pt Nehru and other great leaders of freedom struggle under leadership of Congress party and Mahatma Gandhi.
Dy Chairman Legislative council, Jahangir Mir, MLA Ch Mohd Akram and  Ravinder Sharma also addressed the gathering, Yogesh Sawhney, Shabir Khan, Vikram Malhotra, Anil Chopra, BS Sambyal, Kuldip Verma, Manjit Jatt,  Krishan Bhagat, Ashok Dogra, YB Sharma and others were also present.
In Srinagar party office also, similar function was organised by Congress activists. Recalling the services rendered by architect of modern India, Pt Nehru, Congress leaders paid homage to former Prime Minister and recalled his contributions to the overall development of the country and upliftment of poor and downtrodden sections.
Congress also paid homage to veteran political leader and a great scholar Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary.  The meeting was presided over by PCC  spokesperson Farooq Andrabi.
The speakers stated that Pt Nehru did his utmost to take the country forward in developmental and other sectors and started Prime Minister’s reconstruction plan, which proved a turning point in the overall development of the country, as a result India is one of the super powers of the world.
Those who addressed the meeting included Abdul Gani Khan, Shameema Iqbal, Irfan Naqib, Aslam Laigoroo, Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan, Haroon Rashid and others.
