443 % hike on diesel, 211 % on petrol excise duty in 4 yrs

JAMMU, Sept 8: Alleging that Modi Govt at the Centre has collected over Rs 11 Lakh crore as taxes during last 52 months of his Government, fleecing the common people of this country and by demolishing their budget and their house hold income, Congress Party and its allies have resolved to observe Bharat Bandh on September 10 to mark their protest against price hike of petrol, diesel and LPG.

Announcing this at a press conference at PCC headquarters here this afternoon, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ghulam Ahmed Mir said that Central Excise Duty has been hiked 12 times since the BJP came to power. He said since May 2014, the diesel has witnessed 443.06 % hike on Excise duty. It was just Rs 3.46 per liter in May 2014, while it is Rs 15.33 per litre now. He said on petrol, there has been hike of 211.7 % in the Excise Duty since May 2014. It was just Rs 9.2 per litre in May 2014 while it is Rs 19.48 per litre now.
Mir said the prices of essential commodities are burning holes in the budget of all the Indians and the people of this country will not forgive and forget the Modi Govt for the `Fuel Loot & Plunder’ and will give a befitting reply to the BJP in the coming elections. He alleged that petrol has crossed Rs 82 per litre while prices of cooking gas (LPG) has also gone sky high. The domestic LPG cylinder which was being sold for Rs 414 during May 2014 in UPA regime is now available for Rs 754. The price hike of petroleum products has caused impact on all the items including, vegetables, fruits, grains/ pulses and all other essentials besides transport/carriage. The common man have been badly affected with it. Modi Govt has generated tax worth over Rs 11 Lakh crore with it. The poor, lower middle class and middle class people besides farmers have been badly affected. He demanded that Central Excise and State VAT and other taxes on petrol/ diesel and LPG be reduced and these items should be brought under GST regime so that loot and plunder of public money is stopped.
The PCC chief said that the Prime Minister and BJP legislators/ leaders are maintaining total silence while people are crying with the burden of taxes being imposed on them. They are helpless. He said Congress besides other main opposition parties have decided to protest against this massive price hike and observe Bharat Bandh on Sept 10. He appealed to all the transport and trade bodies besides associations of private educational institutions, Bar members across the State to join this common cause of general public and observed bandh from 9 am to 3 pm on September 10, 2018 (Monday).
Senior Congress leaders, Madan Lal Sharma, Mula Ram, Raman Bhalla and Ravinder Sharma also accompanied.
