Cong asks party leaders to formulate strategy for JK polls, identify candidates

Possibilities after delimitation, rotation of seats discussed

JAMMU, July 17: Congress has asked the party leaders in Jammu and Kashmir to gear up the organization for forthcoming Assembly elections in the Union Territory and formulate a strategy keeping in view the possibilities emerging after delimitation as well as rotation of seats.
Predicting that the Assembly elections in J&K are likely to be held by the end of this year, the party is learnt to have asked its senior functionaries to look for suitable candidates as around two dozen constituencies will require new faces in view of rotation and delimitation of seats.
Reliable sources told the Excelsior that the issue of new faces as candidates came up for discussion during meeting of senior party leaders, held at Srinagar on Saturday and presided over by Rajani Patil – All India Congress Committee Incharge for J&K and Ladakh organizational affairs, who is on a five-day visit to J&K.
The meet discussed current political situation and organizational affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in wake of recently held Prime Minister’s All Party Meeting over J&K and ongoing exercise of the Delimitation Commission, sources added.
The AICC Incharge discussed the roadmap for further strengthening the party at grass root level in Jammu Kashmir and took feedback of the senior Congress leaders, who put forth several suggestions over the same.
Besides JKPCC president Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the meeting was attended by CWC Member and senior leader Tariq Hamid Karra, President Peerzada Mohd Sayeed, Taj Moh-ud-Din, Haji Abdul Rashid, Bashir Ahmad Magrey, Mohd Muzaffar Parray, Khemlata Wakhloo, Gulzar Ahmad Wani, G N Mir Lasjan and Amreen Badre.
Sources said that Congress leaders stressed the need to identify the weak as well as strong areas of the party and work unitedly for filling up the gaps to rejuvenate the organization in Jammu and Kashmir.
Discussing the political possibilities emerging out of the Prime Minister’s All Party Meeting on J&K and ongoing exercise of the Delimitation Commission, sources said that the Congress leaders were of the view that Assembly elections in the Union Territory may be held by the end of this year.
The party observed that after delimitation and rotation of reserved seats for Schedules Castes as well as fresh reservation for Scheduled Tribes, new faces are required to be identified as possible candidates depending upon socio political scenario of the constituencies,” said a senior Congress leader, who was present in the meeting.
The meeting devised the roadmap with regard to political activities, besides organizational affairs and activities to be adopted in coping days.
Apart from other issue concerning J&K, sources said that the meeting expressed serious concern over the rising unemployment, unprecedented price hike in petrol, diesel and other essentials. The Congress leaders resolved to fight against the alleged wrong policies adopted by the Government towards the people of J&K.
Earlier, Rajani Patil had held day-long interaction with the party leaders in Jammu to take the feedback and draw the future strategy for strengthening the party at different levels. Ms Patil held a series of meetings with different teams of leaders and activists and sought the report from various quarters from all over Jammu.
She was apprised of the feedback from the ground about the feelings of the people and the resentment amongst them over alleged failure of the Central Government on various fronts, especially in fulfilling the local aspirations and ‘commitments’ made by the BJP to Jammu region and different sections.
