As a part of nationwide protest of the Congress party over the issue of SC/STs and OBCs, a large number of Congress leaders and workers of all hues including Mahila Congress, Seva Dal, Youth Congress and student wing of the party held a strong protest demonstration under the leadership of PCC chief GA Mir and other senior leaders of the party at Shahidi Chowk, Jammu.
Carrying placards and banners against the BJP Govt at the Centre over the issue of attempts to dilute the reservations of SC/ST and OBCs, the Congress leaders lashed out at the BJP Govt blaming it of adopting anti-SC/ST & OBC approach. They sought adequate protection for their constitutional rights and to ensure that the provisions of reservations as per Constitution should be protected without any dilution.
Addressing the gathering PCC chief said that BJP and RSS are systematically attacking the provisions of reservations for SC/ST & OBC communities through various statements and actions for the last many years. Carrying forwards this agenda, the BJP Govt now has taken the unconstitutional stand in the Supreme Court, wherein the Govt has said “there is no fundamental right to claim reservation in appointments in public posts and there is no Constitutional duty on the part of State Govt to provide reservations.”
Mir said that Modi Govt is taking anti- SC/ST & OBC stands, which will deprive them of opportunities to come forward.
He also lashed out at the Central Govt for its anti- youth decisions with regard to J&K and referred to the withdrawal of age relaxation in Civil Services to the youth of general category as well SC/ST & OBC. The youth of J&K were availing this concession since Congress always protected and promoted the interests of youth of J&K in view of disturbed conditions here for the last three decades. The recent withdrawal of age relaxation has come as a great set back and shock to the youths of J&K and sought immediate revoking of withdrawal order by DOPT of Centre Govt.
Several prominent Congress leaders, especially belonging to SC/ST & OBC, also addressed the gathering and expressed strong resentment over the moves of Centre towards these communities.
Prominent among those who addressed and attended include former ministers Mula Ram, Raman Bhalla, MS Niaz, Kanta Bhan (vice president), Ch Mohd. Akram (Ex-MLA & Chairman ST Wing), GL Chalotra (Ex-MLA – SC Wing), Suresh Dogra (Chairman OBC), Ravinder Sharma, Manmohan Singh, ML Sharma, Kuldeep Verma, Indu Pawar, Ashok Sharma, KC Bhagat, Ch Abdul Ghani, Hari Singh Chib, Ch Zaffarullah, Subash Bhagat, Zahida Khan, Vinod Sharma, HS Mehta, Pawan Raina, Gurdarshan Singh, Iqbal Dar, Karan Bhagat, Rajesh Sadhotra (Seva Dal), Raqeeq Ahmed Khan (NSUI) and others.
