Complex pediatric liver transplant surgery performed at Yashoda Hospital

JAMMU, July 15: The liver transplant team at Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, successfully performed a challenging liver transplant surgery on a two-year old child namely D Mahasen Datta, the only child of D Ramana Manohar and D Manasa hailing from Kothagudem in Telangana State.
The child was suffering from a rare life-threatening liver malignancy – Hepatoblastoma. He was presented to the pediatrician at Yashoda Hospital, with recurrent chest infections, fever, poor growth and an abdominal lump.
On evaluation, he was found to have multiple lesions in the liver with raised Alfa fetoprotein levels and a diagnosis of stage IV dreadful cancer Hepatoblastoma was made.
A multidisciplinary Yashoda team involving the pediatrician, oncologist, liver transplant surgical team, anesthesiology team, intensivist and hepatologist discussed the case and decided to administer Chemotherapy followed by liver transplant for the child. His mother, Manasa decided to donate the liver for her sick son. He received three cycles of Chemotherapy from February to April. He required several hospitalizations with acute febrile illness in this period. Transplantation team has taken utmost care.
The surgery was successfully performed for the child after harvesting left lateral lobe of the liver from his mother. It was a technically challenging, 8+ hours long surgery. The procedure was uneventful and the child was comfortable, pain free at the end of the surgery. The donor (mother) was stable and was discharged after 5 days. The baby was monitored in ICU ever since with utmost care where he recovered very well and also was discharged after 10 days with a fully functioning and healthy liver.
