JAMMU, Oct 16: A 60-year-old cardiac patient was successfully treated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH) by Dr. Nikhil Mahajan, Senior Cardiologist.
The patient was referred to the hospital for cardiac procedure due to reduced heart functioning and had history of cardiac arrest. The reduced heart function required immediate implantation of CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) device.
Under the leadership of Dr Nikhil Mahajan the patient successfully underwent complex cardiac surgery at SMVDNSH and a CRT-D device was implanted in the heart of the patient. As CRT-D enhances diseased hearts’ effectiveness and increases blood flow, its implantation is one of the rarest forms of surgery for cardiac treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mahajan said: “The CRT-D Device monitors the heart’s rhythm, detects irregularities and corrects them with electrical impulses. CRT-D is designed to stop life-threatening ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation with overdrive pacing or electrical shocks. It also improves heart failure symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath and exercise intolerance which significantly improves patients’ quality of life.”
Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai, Chief Administrative Officer at the Hospital said, “Earlier such patients had to travel to metro cities for treatments. However, now such critical treatment is available at our hospital which is equipped with world class medical facilities, qualified doctors and superior medical support staff.”
