Committee to monitor status of convicts

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Jan 2:  For suggesting measures to ensure that those convicted by the court are apprehended and sent behind the bars, the State Government has constituted a Supervisory Committee.
This State Level Supervisory Committee has been constituted in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order in a criminal appeal, titled Lallan Singh and others versus State of Uttar Pradesh.
The four-member committee shall monitor and review, on six monthly basis, the criminal cases in which the convicts  despite having been convicted  and sentenced to imprisonment by the courts, remain at large either on account of non-execution of the warrants or do not surrender after their final appeals are disposed of.
Headed by Administrative Secretary of the Home Department, the committee will submit a biannual status report to the Executive Chairman of the State level Legal Service Authority to take further necessary action in the matter.
DGP, J&K, Administrative Secretary of the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Secretary of the State Legal Service Authority are members of the committee.
