SRINAGAR, Apr 21: Hundreds of college students today staged a protest against killings of five civilians at Handwara Town of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The students including females took out a large procession from Degree College Handwara and marched upto Handwara square where they raised slogans against the killings in Handwara and Kupwara areas last week.
The protesting students later marched to the house of one of the five slain persons, Nayeem Qadir Bhat, and expressed solidarity with his family. The protesters also include colleagues of Nayeem, who was a famous cricketer, and represented his hometown in many prominent formats.
Witnesses said shortly after visiting house of Nayeem, the college students again converged at Main square of Handwara and shouted slogans against killings. The shopkeepers, given the intensity of the protest, downed their shutters and observed a shutdown.
The protesters, majority of college students, clashed with police in town by pelting stones. Police retaliated by lobbing teargas shells and also cane charged many of the protesters. Later, the police managed to restore the order and there was no further violence.
