SRINAGAR : The minimum temperature in most places stayed below the freezing point across Kashmir division where moderate to heavy snowfall is expected tomorrow under the influence of Western Disturbance.
“A Western disturbance is expected to hit Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow and will remain active for the next three days during which moderate to heavy snowfall or rains are expected,” a MET official said.
He said widespread snowfall or rains are expected for the first two days followed by scattered rain or snow – a good news especially for the farming community and the tourism sector as the winter season mostly remained dry so far.
While the high altitude areas witnessed occasional but below average snowfall, the plains including summer capital Srinagar recorded no major snowfall over the past two months.
A brief spell of snowfall was experienced in the city early last month with incessant rains at the end of 40-day “Chillai Kalan” (December 21 to January January 29) – considered as the harshest period of winter in the valley.
Owing to cloud cover, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius – same as the previous night which is normal during this part of the season.
The denizens of Ladakh, however, got some respite from the bone chilling cold as Leh recorded a minimum of minus 6.6 – an increase of almost two degrees compared to yesterday’s minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. (AGENCIES)
