Cold wave continues, DC issues advisory

Srinagar, Dec 29: A severe cold wave triggered by the continued sub zero night temperature for last few weeks Kashmir valley continued leading to freezing of water bodies, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar has issued an advisory asking people not to venture on the frozen surface of the water bodies.
There was no relief from the intense cold in the Valley and Ladakh as the temperature plummeted several notches below the freezing point. This has led to freezing and bursting of water tapes in several areas and people are facing water shortage. In the mornings, majority were without water due to freezing of water taps.
And in the meantime, due to continued subzero night temperatures across the region, the water bodies continued to be frozen. At many places children were playing cricket on the frozen water surfaces and some people were walking on it.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah today cautioned people against walking or playing on the frozen parts of the Dal lake.
Requesting the people to desist from such actions, Shah said it is dangerous and potentially life-threatening. “Due to sub-zero temps in Srinagar, parts of Dal lake freeze these days, especially at the banks and interiors. It is dangerous & potentially life threatening to walk/play on it. It is requested to take note and desist from any such action”, he wrote on micro-blogging website Twitter.
An official of the MeT department said the minimum temperature was minus 7.2 degree Celsius in Srinagar and the maximum day temperature was recorded at 8.6 degree Celsius.
In Pahalgam, the temperature was minus 8.3 degree Celsius and the maximum day temperature was recorded at 8.8 degree Celsius.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg was freezing at minus 7 degree Celsius and the maximum day temperature was recorded at 3.4 degree Celsius.
At minus 21.1 degree Celsius, Drass recorded the night’s lowest temperature, and the town was coldest in the State today. The maximum temperature recorded in Drass on Friday was minus 5.5 degree.
Leh recorded minus 17.5 degree and Kargil minus 16.7 degree as the minimum temperature while the maximum day temperatures of these places settled at 2.2 degree Celsius and minus 1.8 degree Celsius respectively.
Jammu recorded 3.1 degrees Celsius, Katra 4 degrees Celsius, Batote 1 degree Celsius, Banihal 3.7 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah minus 1.5 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature on Saturday. The maximum day temperatures at these places settled at 19.1 degree Celsius, 16.1 degree Celsius, 14.7 degree Celsius, 13.5 degree Celsius and 13.2 degree Celsius respectively.
