Sir,
This year we all witnessed a very unusual thing. The enemies of past became best friends. Two opposite forces came together. Those who used to tease, hassle and harass each other were now holding hands and singing songs of friendship. The arch rivals PDP and BJP joined hands to form a Coalition Government together. Many were surprised while very few saw it as a Government which can very effectively bring peace in the valley as well as in Jammu.PDP having ideology completely opposite to that of the BJP but still both agreed for coalition. It seemed like a compromise just to get power and rule for next 5 years. BJP during their election campaign very boldly expressed their views on the “article 370” and also said that their CM will definitely be from the Jammu province.
On the other hand the PDP were from the beginning against AFSPA. But the “hunger of power” made these two parties to compromise and settle for something they were against. Still very few believed in this coalition. But this PDP-BJP Government in Kashmir had a very controversial start when the Chief Minister gave a very contentious statement, in which he thanked “people from across the border” for the smooth conduct of Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections. It turned out to be the perfect chance for the opposition to throw stones on an already trembling structure. The coalition also faced crisis when Hurriyat chief Syed Geelani’s passport issue came up. The coalition was divided with different ideas where the BJP were against granting the passport until and unless Geelani fills up the nationality blank with INDIAN whereas the PDP had no problem in giving the passport anyway. BJP came very clear with their approach while PDP stayed away from publicly commenting on this issue. It again gave the opposition a chance to take a shot at this Coalition Government.
The coalition was again tested recently when the issue of AIIMS came up. BJP were unable to get hold of the position but somehow they managed the whole situation when the things were about to go out of their hands. It is still very early to judge and comment on this coalition but the start has not been the best for the public or for the parties. The coalition is facing so many troubles and because of that the development of the state has not been on its priority list.
Yours etc…
