CM reviews security of Panchayat members

SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah this evening held an overall security review with the security agencies here in Srinagar in the back drop of twin attacks on two Panchayat members in Sopore area of North Kashmir.
Omar was briefed about the prevailing situation in Kashmir valley and steps taken by the security forces against the militancy. The meeting was held after a Sarpanch was killed in Bombai, Sopore and a woman Panch was critically injured when unidentified gun men fired at her in Hardshiva Sopore last night.
Sources said that the security agencies briefed the Chief Minister about the security situation in the Sopore area where the two attacks took place on Friday and Saturday on Panchayat members.
The security forces assured the Chief Minister that the security patrolling in the sensitive areas of the Kashmir valley which are militancy hit will be intensified to give a sense of security to the Panchayat members. It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister had already ruled out personal security to the Panchayat members but has assured them sense of security.
Omar was also briefed about the recent operation in the Sopore area during which 9 top Laskhar-e-Toiba militants were killed. He was told that the attack on the Panchayat members was an act of desperation at the hands of the militants after successful operation in the area.
Sources said that Chief Minister was briefed about the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) especially in Hajipeer sector where the ceasefire violation by Pakistan led to escalation of tension along the LoC.
The Chief Minister was briefed that the militants are trying to infiltrate into Kashmir and after they failed in thier designs, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire to help infiltrators to sneak in.
Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal Secretary Home, Suresh Kumar, DGP, Ashok Prasad and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15-Corps Om Prakash, heads of the various security agencies and senior police and civil administration officers participated in the meeting.
Soon after the security review meeting, Omar visited SKIMS hospital in Soura area of Srinagar and met the injured Panchayat member Zoona Begam, who was shot at by unidentified militants last night.
The Chief Minister enquired of her health conditions and prayed for her early recovery. He also directed the hospital administration for providing all possible medical treatment to the woman Panchayat member.
Zoona received two bullets, one each in her eye and another in her neck.
