CM, over 1000 remain stranded on Hindustan-Tibet road

SHIMLA, June 17: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his staff were stuck in the picturesque Sangla Valley today as the entire area has been cut-off owing to landslides, an official said.
Incessant rainfall in the region has triggered massive landslides that blocked the road leading to the valley in Kinnaur district.
Deputy Commissioner J M Pathania said work was on to reopen the road link to the valley and other major roads. Over 1,000 tourists were also stranded across the district, mainly in Sangla area.
He said high alert has been declared as more than 60 per cent of the district was badly hit by heavy rain. Even some the areas in Pooh and Chitkul experienced unseasonal snowfall.
The Chief Minister, who was on an election tour for the Mandi Parliamentary bypoll slated for June 23, has been stationed at Sangla village, some 275 kms from the state capital.
The Hindustan-Tibet road leading to the China border along with Kinnaur is blocked at several locations, said the officials.
The sources said due to inclement weather it was not feasible to conduct chopper rescue operation adding that the Met office has forecast bad weather conditions in the state during next few days.
