JAMMU, Aug 28: A 14-year-old girl was killed today after being hit by a speedily driven mini- bus in Bathindi area of city outskirts, triggering protests and a brief blockade of Sidhra Bye Pass road at Narwal.

“Saima Kousar (14), a class 8th student of Government High School, Bathindi, and daughter of Mir Qasim, resident of Bani, district Kathua (at present residing in Bathindi, Jammu), was on her way to school from her Bathindi residence when at about 7.45 am, a speeding mini-bus bearing registration number JK02BB-5294 hit her near Madina hill”, a police official said.
He said that the girl sustained serious head injuries in the mishap due to which she died on the spot. The official said that the body of the deceased girl was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where after completing all medico-legal formalities it was handed over to her legal heirs for last rites.
“However, as soon as the news of the accident of the girl aired in the locality, the students and teachers of her school as well as neighbouring Government as well as private schools along with the relatives of the girl blocked the main bypass road for nearly an hour, demanding stern action against the bus driver, who fled the scene abandoning his vehicle after the accident”, the official said, adding due to blockade heavy jam was of vehicles was witnessed on both sides of the Highway.
He added that the protesters, including the relatives of the girl, subsequently dispersed peacefully after senior officers of civil and police administration including ADC Arun Manhas, SP South, Sandeep Choudhary and DSP Arun Jamwal visited the spot and assured them of action against the accused.
In this connection, a case FIR No 199/2017 under Sections 229/304A was registered against the accused driver at police station Trikuta Nagar and the mini-bus was seized while efforts were on to nab the absconding driver, the official said.
Meanwhile, former Minister and senior Congress leader, Raman Bhalla also reached the spot and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family. He also asked the police administration to check over-speeding and overloading by public and private vehicles so that such mishaps can be avoided.
