Srinagar, Dec 1: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) lower rung leaders and workers today exchanged boos, pelted stones and beat one another at Dak Bungalow Khanabal in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district during party’s district presidents’ election.
The election for district president and incharges of various constituencies was scheduled to take place today. As soon as one Ghulam Hassan was nominated incharge of Dooru constituency, a BJP leader Gul Muhammad Atal Mir raised objected to Hassan’s nomination. He along with his supporters created disorder, the witnesses said. Subsequently, Khursheed Ahmad Malik – another BJP leader – raised objection to the nomination of Muhammad Sidiq Khan as incharge for Kokernag constituency.
The verbal brawl soon turned into physical fight as BJP workers and leaders exchanged boos and hurled abuses at one another. The disgruntled BJP leaders – Gul Muhammad and Khursheed Ahmad Malik – and their workers pelted stones on the vehicles of State General Secretary Dr Narendra Singh, MLC Sofi Muhammad Yosuf and senior leader and South Kashmir Incharge Veer Saraf and broke their window panes.
Due to clashes and disorder, the elections for district presidents for Anantnag and Kulgam were deferred indefinitely by the BJP leadership.
Meanwhile in a statement issued here, a spokesman of BJP said the party announced the names of constituency presidents and district presidents of south Kashmir during convention at Dak Bungalow in Anantnag. He said Rafiq Wani has been nominated as district president of Anantnag, Gulam Nabi Dar for Kulgam, Javaid Qadri for Shopian and Master Abdul Gani for Pulwama.
