CHENNAI, Oct 17: A 57-year-old teacher, who was paralysed from below the hip after a road accident in 2008, has got compensation of Rs 75 lakh, thanks to a settlement reached in a recent Lok Adalat.
Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul today handed over the cheque to the wife of A Jesudoss, an assistant headmaster of a school in Tamil Nadu, who became permanently disabled after the mishap.
Tata AIG General Insurance Company gave the cheque complying with the award passed by Justice M Thanikachalam and members S Manoharan and Daniel Mary at the Lok Adalat conducted by the High Court Legal Services Committee.
Jesudoss, an Assistant Head Master in a private school at Elathagiri, was severely injured when a car hit his two-wheeler on March 24, 2008. Despite medical treatment, he lost sense below his hip and become 100 per cent disabled.
The Krishnagiri District Motor Accident Tribunal had directed the Tata AIG, with which the car was insured, to pay Rs 70.90 lakh as compensation.
The company appealed against the award in the high court, which referred the matter to the High Court Legal Services Authority for immediate solution.
In the Lok Adalat, the insurance company agreed to pay Rs 75 lakh as compensation.
Justice Kaul, the patron-in-chief of the authority, handed over the cheque to the wife of Jesudoss in his chamber. (PTI)
