Home Ministry’s decision of according sanction to the introduction of subsidized chopper services in 10 sectors each in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to connect inaccessible destinations is welcome. This service has been recommended strictly for inaccessible places in the two States in their specific regions. This decision is almost a gift to the people living in far off villages in these regions which, for most part of the winter, remain snow bound and cut off from the rest of the country. In terms of social service, this will be a historic moment when the service begins to operate. Ladakh, as we know, is the largest district in the country in terms of land mass. As it is a plateau at the altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level, its physical and geographical constraints have been debilitating factor for the people. But with a very pragmatic decision taken by the Home Minister, difficulties of the people in these far off inaccessible regions will be overcome.
These are reported to be subsidized flights meaning the commuters will have to pay less as the Government will subsidize the difference. But the Home Ministry has laid down rules and conditions for the subsidy which appears to be very just and sensible. The Home Ministry deserved kudos for this people-friendly decision and the people in Kargil and Ladakh regions should be thankful to the Centre for conceding their demands and trying to alleviate their problems.
