BEIJING, Feb 17: A Chinese policeman was today sentenced to death for gunning down a pregnant woman and injuring her husband at a restaurant last year.
The Guigang Intermediate People’s Court sentenced capital punishment to Hu Ping for intentional homicide and ordered him to pay compensation of 73,324 yuan (USD 12,090) to the victim’s family, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The case had caused nation wide revulsion with calls for stern punishment against the cop and the court conducted public hearing to ensure transparency.
An investigation by the local public security bureau showed Hu was drunk when he shot the couple, who ran a rice noodle restaurant in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on October 28 last year after a dispute with the victims.
The husband sustained minor injuries to his right shoulder, but the wife and her unborn child died. (AGENCIES)
